Police Endorse Bush -
Press Mum Remember when presidential candidate Bill Clinton won the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police, the nation's largest police association? The major media noted how Democrat Bill had beat out his Republican opponent for this important endorsement. What is good for the goose is not good for the gander, now that Republican George W. Bush just won the FOP's endorsement.
You probably haven't seen this in your local paper, so here is the FOP's announcement, released Friday: F.O.P. ENDORSES BUSH FOR PRESIDENT Gilbert G. Gallegos, National President of the Grand Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police, today announced the organization's endorsement of Governor George W. Bush for President of the United States. "Governor Bush's commitment to law enforcement and his crime-fighting record in Texas, make him the best candidate for America's police officers," Gallegos said from Oklahoma City, where the group's National Board is meeting this weekend.
"Real officers facing real problems understand that George W. Bush is a leader who shares their values and shares an unyielding commitment to supporting law enforcement with action," Gallegos said. The F.O.P.'s concern over "pattern and practice" investigations by the U.S. Justice Department, which has launched lawsuits against various police departments, and last fall's decision by the current Administration to pardon sixteen terrorists (eleven of whom are now free) weighed heavily in favor of Governor Bush.
"The Fraternal Order of Police does not issue an endorsement like this lightly," Gallegos continued. "Governor Bush has earned our endorsement because he is a leader who will do what he says and do right by the cop on the beat. We will stand behind him and look forward to working with him when he takes up residence in the White House." The Fraternal Order of Police is the largest law enforcement labor organization in the United States, with over 290,000 members.
